Elfreda was the first of two children. She
was an epitome of a spoilt brat—rude, proud and arrogant. Her younger and only
sister, Karen, was the exact opposite—quiet side and cultured. From a fairly
wealthy home, they both had some of the best things their contemporaries could
only dream of. As soon as Elfreda got into the university, her father got her a
brand new car to help ease her movement on campus.
Despite the fact that she lacked nothing
and had a young boyfriend about the same age with her, Elfeda still went for older,
richer but married men. She relished the thrill that comes with been chased by
these men. So, she paid little or no attention to her younger boyfriend who was
quite smitten with her but wished she could be a better person character-wise.
Try as much as he could, he couldn’t pay her a visit
at home—she discouraged any attempt by him to pay her even a short visit during
the holidays. She didn’t think he was good enough to pay her any visit, let
alone allow her parents see them together.
But their relationship continued, albeit on shaky
grounds. Bismarck, her boyfriend, soon graduated ahead of her, completed his national
service and got a job in one of the foremost oil companies.
Elfreda graduated too but her younger sister was in
the second year in the same university.
With Bismarck’s new status, Elfreda attempted becoming
really serious with him and get married. She began to make overtures to him
about making him visit her at home and consequently get her parents to see him.
While he didn’t exactly turn her down, he made up excuses not to honour her
invitations.
She soon saw that she was fast losing her hold on him
and tried every means possible to make things go back the way it used to be.
But she soon discovered more than she bargained for.
One fateful day as she sat lounging in her parent’s house, Bismarck walked into
her home with one of his female cousins. They were both surprised to see each
other. Bismarck had never been to her home and wondered why she was in the home
he was visiting. Elfreda, on the other hand, had tried convincing him the
previous day to pay her a visit, something he turned down on the excuse that he
was travelling out of the state for an important assignment.
While
the surprise acts were on, Karen came out, happily jumped on Bismarck and kissed
him. She then proceeded to introduce him to her elder sister as her fiancée,
who was responsible for the child she was carrying.
Of course shock and disbelief were clearly written on
everyone’s face including their parents at discovering that their daughters had
been dating the same man!
After waiting
patiently for everyone to bare their mind, he explained that he didn’t set out
to deliberately date two women at the same time, let alone sisters. He insisted
that he never knew both of them as sisters
He told of how Elfreda had humiliated and punctured
his ego with her and how all that suddenly changed when he met Karen who gave
love a new meaning with her positive attitude.
While he didn’t plan that things would turn out the
way it did, he is none the less happy to be with Karen who he wants as wife.
While their parents are at a loss as to what to say, Elfreda is insisting that
the marriage would only hold over her dead body.
